There are different ways to jumpstart your career as a bookkeeper, but joining the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers is a popular option. Read on to learn how to get your bookkeeper certification.

American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPD)

The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPD) recognizes the profession of bookkeeping and the professionals who hold positions. There aren’t education requirements to hold this title, but there are five steps to complete:

  1. Submit Application

You’ll apply before you can start your journey to receive a bookkeeper certification online. The application includes the following basic information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Current employer information

You’ll need to meet work experience requirements, but you don’t have to complete the requirements before applying.

  1. Submit Work Experience Statement

If you are already a bookkeeper, you’ll need to submit a statement of your work experience. Two years minimum is required for those who work as a bookkeeper full-time.

If you are a freelancer who works only part-time, you have to complete 3,000 hours of bookkeeping work.

If you don’t have this work experience completed yet, don’t fret! You have three years after you pass the exam to complete your requirements. If you have achieved some of the hours necessary, at least submit those.

  1. Pass Certification Exam

The biggest step to how to become a certified bookkeeper is passing the certification exam. The exam consists of four parts, two of which you will need to complete at a testing center. The final two are included in the workbooks you must purchase.

You can retake each part of the exam if you don’t pass for a fee. Parts one and two are more expensive than retaking parts three and four.

  1. Sign Code of Ethics

The second to last step to becoming a certified bookkeeper is to agree to the set code of ethics. This document outlines bookkeeping obligations every bookkeeper should adhere to.

  1. Maintain Certification

The last step is maintaining your certification by acquiring professional education credits over time. If you fail to meet the requirements, you will lose your certification.
